Game 38: Alresford Town 7.2 Petersfield Town (Wessex League Cup Final) 05.05.14
The first of three cup finals in a week, the Wessex League Cup final was played at Bemerton’s ground between Wessex Premier runners up Alresford Town and First Division champions Petersfield Town.
The first half saw a breathtaking five goals in the first twenty minutes. Alresford scored after two minutes, Petersfield equalised on four minutes, Alresford scored two minutes later to make it 2.1 after six minutes. After ten minutes they scored following a breakaway from a Petersfield corner to make it 3.1, the fourth goal coming from a low shot after 20 minutes. Petersfield had a chance to pull a goal back from the penalty spot later in the half but the Alresford keeper managed to save the shot with his trailing foot.
The second half saw Alresford extend their lead to 6.1 with two well taken goals before Petersfield scored a consolation with five minutes to play.There was still time for Alresford to score again with a dribble past the keeper’s outstretched arm and a tap in to the empty net. This was the last game for the outgoing Alresford management team and their team certainly gave them a good send off.
