Game 39: Bemerton Heath Harlequins 2.3 Andover Town (Salisbury Hospital Cup Final) 07.05.14
The second of three cup finals this week, the Salisbury Hospital Cup Final between Bemerton Heath Harlequins and Andover Town, played at Salisbury’s Raymond McEnhill ground.
After the excitement of yesterday’s bank holiday game at their ground, Bemerton scored an even quicker goal to take the lead in less than a minute. As the half wore on the Andover supporters were unhappy that Bemerton’s physical play wasn’t being penalised with yellow cards. They got some comfort near the end of normal time when their side equalised from a free kick that curled round the Bemerton wall and in. They were even happier in injury time when a breakaway attack saw a shot deflected past the keeper and in to give Andover an unexpected lead at halftime.
Bemerton pushed forward in the second half and scored an equaliser with fifteen minutes to go. Danny Young forced an Andover defender into a mistake, winning the ball and taking it into the area before blasting the ball home. Both teams were pressing for a winner when former Salisbury striker Claudio Herbert struck a well placed shot low into the goal to give Andover the lead with eight minutes to go. Despite a couple of scares before the end, they managed to hang onto the lead to the full time whistle.
