Game 1: Downton 0.0 Cowes Sports (Wessex 1)

Game 1: Downton 0.0 Cowes Sports (Wessex 1) 09.08.14

After an awful summer of speculation and court cases relating to the ownership of Salisbury City it was good to be able to get out and watch a game. Having seen a couple of planned pre-season games cancelled, I decided to take in a local match at Downton.

I haven’t had much luck in seeing goals at Wick Lane, two of my last three games ending in a ‘dreaded’. Arriving at the ground it was clear that a lot of work had gone into tidying up the ground and I was hopeful for a good game in the sunshine. Cowes dominated the first half with numerous corners but didn’t get the goal they were looking for, coming close when they hit the post.

Downton had a better second half but weren’t able to take their chances. Cowes saw a shot deflected over and the referee blow for a free kick in their favour just as the player who had been fouled was about to break towards goal. With a few minutes to go they laid siege to the Downton goal and thought they had scored from a corner. The Downton keeper was off his line and managed to get a diving hand to tip the ball to his left. It may have gone in off the post but a defender was there to cover and head the ball off the line. The Cowes players appealed loudly for a goal, thinking the keeper was on the line and the ball went over before it was cleared but the officials got it right. Thanks to some determined defensive play the game ended without a goal, the first time I’ve seen a nil-nil on the opening day of the season.
