Game 2: Bemerton Heath Harlequins 0.5 Hamworthy United 12.08.14
An early season midweek encounter at Western Way, perhaps too early for the home chairman whose programme notes indicated that in a floodlit league, he would prefer to see the season start later to allow for holidays and weddings.
Bemerton have lost a few key players from last season’s team and were under pressure from the start, Hamworthy hitting the bar from a long range shot early on. Bemerton’s keeper made two fingertip saves after a quarter of an hour but had no chance when a Hamworthy player strode into the box and took the ball round him before scoring. Both sides saw headers go close before Hamworthy added a second, a good move saw passes cut through the Bemerton lines and a low shot was deflected past the keeper and in off the post. From a corner a few minutes later Hamworthy made it 0.3. The ball was played to their captain who was unmarked on the edge of the six yard box and he blasted a shot in. We almost saw a fourth goal just before halftime but the ball rolled just wide of the post.
The fourth goal eventually game ten minutes into the second half and was the most spectacular goal of the game. A long distance shot from the left curled down and into the top corner giving the keeper no chance to get near it. A late breakaway goal wrapped up the scoring just before the final whistle.
