Game 6: Hanwell Town 1.2 Grays Athletic (FA Cup)

Game 6: Hanwell Town 1.2 Grays Athletic (FA Cup) 10.10.15

A trip up to London with Alan for Hanwell’s first appearance in the FA Cup 3rd Round qualifying round. They were the underdogs for the game with Grays playing a division higher in the Ryman Premier.

Hanwell got off to a good start when the referee awarded a penalty when a free kick hit high over the wall was brought to earth by a jumping defender’s hand. However the kick was weak and allowed the keeper to make a straightforward save before grabbing the rebound. Grays took the lead in the 20th minute when an attempt from a corner was headed off the line and the follow up header went into the corner past the keeper’s dive. It took Hanwell a minute to get level, a defensive mix up allowing a striker through and he placed a low shot past the keeper. Just before halftime it looked like Grays would have a penalty but the referee booked the player who was brought down.

Grays dominated the second half but were denied by some great goalkeeping and reflex saves by Hanwell’s keeper. In the last minute he dropped a cross into the box and in trying to recover the ball Hanwell conceded a penalty. The keeper guessed the right way but the Grays striker put too much power behind the shot for him to reach it.
