Game 11: Winterbourne United 5.1 Street (Les Phillips Cup) 14.11.15
A very wet and windy afternoon but no problems in getting the game on as Winterbourne use the Gloucestershire FA’s all weather pitch in Almondsbury. We took shelter in the clubhouse and had a read of the programme before venturing out to the main stand to watch the game undercover. Winterbourne had a new management team in place following the resignation of their predecessors and the Chairman noted that despite recent losses the team were playing well and were due a big win.
Both teams adapted to the conditions with Winterbourne taking an early lead on the break, keeping the ball on the ground to set up the chance. Street had a couple of shots wide and hit the post with a third effort. They equalised shortly after the restart before Winterbourne took control of the game. They retook the lead with a carefully curled shot and ten minutes later scored when a freekick was headed in by an unmarked player. Street hit the crossbar with a vicious shot before Winterbourne added two more goals late on.
Postscript – Sadly this match turned out to be Winterbourne’s last home game in the Western League. After a couple of away games they resigned from the league with immediate effect at the start of December.
