Game 21: Andover Town 2.0 Team Solent (Wessex Premier) 26.04.16
A visit to the Portway with Alan, the first time we’ve been there to see the recently formed Andover Town. Although it was a mid April night, it felt more like November with a bitterly cold wind blowing across the ground. There had been a few hail and snow flurries in the area during the day.
Andover were well organised and used pacy players on the flanks to good effect. They took the lead after 12 minutes when the ball was played across the penalty area and knocked in at the far post. Ten minutes later they scored a second with a shot from outside the area that was hit with pace and bounced up by the near post before hitting the back of the net. From our angle to the side of the goal it looked to be going wide and perhaps the keeper thought the same. One of his defenders was livid, shouting and swearing at him to get the ball from the net to restart the game. The defender was subbed off at halftime but still had a part to play in the second half.
Team Solent were much improved in the second half and kept the ball better than in the first half. Andover were still creating plenty of chances and were unlucky to see a long range shot dip down over the keeper before crashing back off the crossbar. Solent then broke away and only a point blank reflex save from the Andover keeper stopped them from pulling a goal back. As the ball bounced around the area one of the Solent players was perhaps too eager to try and win it back and caught an Andover player with a strong tackle. There was a bout of handbags and we were surprised to see the subbed defender running back on to the pitch to join in. After a short delay, he was picked out as an offender and shown a yellow card, shortly followed by a red for his reaction.
