Game 3: Slough Town 6.1 Chipstead (FA Cup) 03.09.16
A meet up for Alan’s birthday and the first FA Cup match at Slough Town’s new ground. Met up in a local pub where the talk soon turned to the sad news that Chocky had passed away just before going to watch England away in Slovenia. Someone who loved his football and visiting non-league grounds when he wasn’t watching his beloved Sheffield United and England – he’ll be missed by many.
On to the game and while the main stand is in progress there was plenty of cover behind the goals and on the far side. The ground is owned by the local council so to maximise use, a plastic pitch has been installed. Any thoughts of an FA Cup upset were soon dashed as Slough scored in the second minute of the game – a long throw was headed back to the far post and then headed in. Slough looked comfortable on the ball and saw a free kick deflected off the bar before scoring two more before half-time.
The second half continued in a similar vein. Slough hit the bar twice and while the Chipstead keeper made some good saves, he was beaten again with a powerful shot from close range. A Slough defender hit the ball out of the ground when in a good position 6 yards out and with ten minutes to go, gifted a goal to Chipstead with a clearance under no pressure that flew into the bottom corner. By now the rain had started to pour down but Slough saved the best to near the end – scoring a fifth when a player beat the keeper to the ball and hit a perfect curving finish to beat the retreating defender and hit the inside of the net next to the post. The final goal came in injury time when the ball was forced over the line with the keeper beaten.
