Game 4: Egham Town 0.1 St Albans City (FA Cup)

Game 4: Egham Town 0.1 St Albans City (FA Cup) 15.10.16

Decided to take in an FA Cup 1st round match with a home team taking on a higher ranked opponent and plumped for the game at Egham Town’s Runnymede ground. St Albans play in the National League South, two divisions above Egham who play in the Southern League Central.

St Albans made countless chances in the first half but were very wasteful in front of goal. Eventually their pressure paid off and Merson scored just before the half hour. A ball into the area was missed by the first player but ran through to Merson who kept his close range shot on target before a spectacular flip celebration. He should have scored again shortly afterwards with a one on one chance but inexplicably tried to dink the ball over the keeper and saw it go straight into the keeper’s hands.

The second half saw Egham come very close to getting back into the game. After a spell of home pressure a header bounced just in front of the goal and only a superb one handed save from the St Albans keeper kept it out. A few minutes later and an Egham shot from a corner was cleared off the line. St Albans seemed unsure on how to cope with the pressure and were almost caught out again when Egham hit the bar from close range. Despite some vocal support, Egham ran out of time to force a replay.
