Game 10: Baffins Milton Rovers 4.0 Hythe & Dibden (Wessex 1) 18.02.17

Drove down to Portsmouth on a mild and sunny afternoon to meet Alan and watch the second of this seasons promoted to the Wessex League clubs, Baffins Milton Rovers. The ground was easy to find, just off the Eastern Road with a big sign for the Kendall Stadium. The approach road also leads to a yacht club but there wasn’t much traffic which was handy as this road was the only place to park nearby.

The programme mentioned that Baffins had the most goals in any step 6 league so far this season so we were hopeful of seeing a few today. Despite this record, Hamble Club had an 11 point league and a better goal difference so realistically Baffins needed the points to keep ahead of Laverstock & Ford who were 3 points behind with two games in hand.

Baffins started well and almost scored in the first minute only to see the visiting keeper push the ball wide for a corner. They were dominating in midfield and passing the ball with confidence so it was no surprise when they took the lead midway through the first half. A long high ball played in a striker who lobbed the advancing keeper. There were several other chances but the final shots were either lacking direction or pace.

The second half was a similar story as Hythe found it difficult to create any clear cut chances. Baffins extended their lead on the hour with a good volley following a cross. Ten minutes later a superb dribble down the right took out several defenders with the subsequent cross leaving a Baffins player with a straightforward tap in for their third goal. The final goal came with five minutes to go, an overhead kick in the area that looked to have been cleared off the line before the assistant referee flagged to confirm it had gone in. An enjoyable game to watch.

Game 4: Hythe & Dibden 1.4 Moneyfields (FA Cup) 15.08.2015

A first visit to Hythe’s new ground for a Wessex 1 v Wessex Premier FA Cup tie on a lovely warm summer’s afternoon. Moneyfields were too strong for Hythe in the first half and scored on 34 minutes with a close range shot and four minutes later with a good header from a deep cross that gave the keeper no chance.

Hythe pulled a goal back in the 51st minute thanks to a deflection that set up their player to put a shot under the keeper and in. They were caught out ten minutes later by a counter attack that left their goal open and the Moneyfields sub had no problem in passing the back into the back of the net. Hythe were unlucky not to pull a goal back from a corner when the ball was hooked over the keeper but it came back off the post. Moneyfields added a fourth in injury time when a good passing move was finished by their striker holding off a defender to swivel and score from close in.
